Dear Friends and Colleagues,
You are invited to join our La Trobe Archaeology Zoom webinar at 8:30 pm on Thursday, 25 March (Australian Eastern Daylight Time [AEDT]).
Dr Lorena Becerra-Valdivia (Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, UK) will discuss 'A chronology to the initial peopling of the Americas.'
For many decades, a kind of time barrier set at about 15,000 years ago resisted archaeologists' attempts to demonstrate earlier settlement of North America, despite many intriguing possibilities. Recently, that has all changed. Ancient DNA studies have thrown new light on the origins and movements of the first American settlers, and now much earlier sites have been found and are being precisely dated by researchers such as our guest tonight.
Register in advance for the seminar at the following link by 5:00pm, Thursday 25 March (AEDT).

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
You are invited to join our La Trobe Archaeology Zoom webinar at 3:00 pm on Thursday, 18 March (Australian Eastern Daylight Time [AEDT]).
Dr Hilary Howes (Australian National University) will speak on 'Uncovering Pacific Pasts: An International Exhibition on Histories of Archaeology in Oceania.'
From the eighteenth century, the cultural productions of Pacific peoples fascinated and challenged the nascent disciplines of archaeology and anthropology. In turn, Pacific peoples interpreted and reimagined the tools and weapons brought to them by European visitors. This talk will revealed the interconnected histories of Pacific objects displayed world-wide by the 'Collective Biography of Archaeology in the Pacific' Project.
Register in advance for the seminar at the following link by 12 noon, Thursday 18 March (AEDT).

Hi Lakesiders.
Just as a reminder, there are two runs this week.
If you're a Baysider you might like to trot along to Royal Peninsula HHH's
AGM on Tuesday night. It has gained itself an official Lakeside run number,
so it would be great if some Lakesiders could come and pal E&B.
And then of course there's our annual St Patricks Day Run, hared by Back
Again, but I strongly suspect there's one of Ned's descendants playing a
strong hand in it.
Details are:
Run # 1991
Date: Tuesday 16 March 2021
Venue: Club 27, 10 Aldershot Drive, Langwarrin
Occasion: Royal Peninsula HHH Annual General M.
Run # 1992
Date: Wednesday 17 March 2021
Venue: Dendy Park, East Brighton
Occasion: St Patricks Day - SO WEAR GREEN AND DRINK GREEN BEER

Hi All.
Just in case you're having trouble booking into the Enclave cabins in
Healesville for our weekend run away, there are some other comparable
accommodations that I'd suggest you try.
The following are from Booking.com and are all available for single night
stays too if you want to drive up on Saturday morning and stay only Saturday
night.
. There's the Healesville Motor Inn - on Maroondah Hwy on the way in
to Healesville - $290 for two nights.
. BIG 4 on Don Road - just (further away from town) down the road
from the Enclave at $238 for two nights.
. Sanctuary House Resort which is close by to Enclave via some back
streets without going into town - $242 for 2 nights.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
You are invited to join our La Trobe Archaeology Zoom webinar at 8:30 pm on Thursday, 11 March (Australian Eastern Daylight Time [AEDT]).
Professor José Iriarte (University of Exeter) will speak on the topic 'An Ice Age Art Gallery in Amazonia? The End of the Journey Project.'
Despite being well-known for remarkable civilisations such as the Moche and Inca, the early settlement of South America has remained obscure until recent times, and the development of complex society in the continent had long been thought to trail Mesoamerica to its north. Now we have long tent-houses dating 14,000 years old at the tip of southern Chile, and the earliest urban complexes in the Americas at Caral and Aspero in Peru, predating the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Professor Iriarte's research has revealed earth-building societies stretching for hundreds of thousands of square kilometres across Amazonia and a sophisticated agroforestry tradition developed in the region. Most spectacular of all is his discovery of rock art galleries in Colombia, stretching over 12 kilometres long, that depict a plethora of extinct animals dating to 12,500 years ago.
