Professor José Iriarte (University of Exeter) will speak on the topic ‘An Ice Age Art Gallery in Amazonia? The End of the Journey Project.’ Despite being well-known for remarkable civilisations such as the Moche and Inca, the early settlement of South America has remained obscure until recent times, and the development of complex society in the continent had long been thought to trail Mesoamerica to its north. Now we have long tent-houses dating 14,000 years old at the tip of southern Chile, and the earliest urban complexes in the Americas at Caral and Aspero in Peru, predating the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Professor Iriarte’s research has revealed earth-building societies stretching for hundreds of thousands of square kilometres across Amazonia and a sophisticated agroforestry tradition developed in the region. Most spectacular of all is his discovery of rock art galleries in Colombia, stretching over 12 kilometres long, that depict a plethora of extinct animals dating to 12,500 years ago.
